Tri-C Latino students to receive $70,000 in scholarships, July 27

CLEVELAND: Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) will celebrate Hispanic achievement in higher education and the 25th anniversary of the College’s Hispanic Council during a scholarship luncheon on Friday, July 27, 2018.

More than 70 Hispanic students will receive $70,000 in scholarships during the event at Aloft Hotel in downtown Cleveland. The luncheon is sponsored by the Hispanic Council.

“These students and the promise they show represent the reason for the Hispanic Council,” said Esther Kraft, program manager for the outreach organization. “We’re here to make a difference in their lives.”

Scholarships for the 2018-2019 academic year are awarded through the Cuyahoga Community College Foundation and made possible through the support of many donors, including AT&T and KeyBank.

The Foundation established the special scholarship fund in 2003 to provide financial assistance to qualified Hispanic students.

“Thanks to the generosity of our partners, these scholarships provide greater access to higher education,” said Megan O’Bryan, president of the Tri-C Foundation. “This investment in people opens doors for the region’s future leaders to build their success.”

This year’s annual luncheon will also honor the 25th anniversary of Tri-C’s Hispanic Council, which formed in 1993 to introduce Hispanic students to the resources they need to succeed. More than 1,400 Hispanic students took classes at the College last year.

The Council serves as a one-stop shop for Hispanic students to receive guidance in everything from academics to residency status. It also offers bilingual assistance with enrollment, financial aid, class registration and English as a Second Language (ESL) courses.

The Hispanic Council also stays active in Northeast Ohio’s Hispanic community. It has been a key partner in Bienvenidos a Cleveland, a project assisting Puerto Rican families relocating to Cleveland following the devastation of Hurricane María.

The luncheon will take place from noon to 1:15 p.m. at Aloft Hotel, located at 1111 W. 10th St. in Cleveland.
