Olé! Cinco de Mayo Fiesta at the Toledo Zoo

May 5, 2019: The Toledo Zoo celebrated its annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration.

Cinco de Mayo literally translates to the fifth of May but it is much more than simply a calendar date. On May 5, 1862 underdog Mexican forces defeated the larger French Army at the Battle of Puebla. While the battle was not a huge strategic win, it was a moral, patriotic, and unifying victory for Mexico which had been invaded by the French while the US was engaged in its Civil War.

The Toledo Zoo celebrated that victory with a traditional Mexican fiesta on Sunday, May 5 at the Zoo’s Main Plaza. There was live entertainment by El Corazón de Mexico Folklorico Dance Group, music provided by DJ Tony Rios, piñata, Mexican paper flower crafts, and other fun activities.

The activities took place from 11a.m. – 3 p.m.  This family-friendly fiesta was free with Zoo admission.
